Once a year in October the best part of Nauset Beach is the parking lot. The quiet, shark-patrolled stretch of sandy beach turns into a full-blown music festival, complete with killer bands on two stages, a beer garden, and a few thousand of your new closest friends.
The Outermost Roots & Blues Festival has become one of the best things about Nauset Beach. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re thinking about going.
What the outermost festival Is (and why it’s a big deal here)
The Outermost festival is the brainchild of Garrett Dutton, better known by his stage name, G. Love, of G. Love & Special Sauce. Dutton has called Orleans home for years now, and the festival is basically his love letter to the town: a chance to bring some serious national touring talent to a stretch of beach on Cape Cod most of those musicians would otherwise never play.
It’s produced in partnership with Hog Island Beer Co. (the same local brewery we always recommend for an after-beach drink) and benefits the Friends of Nauset Beach, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the beach’s environment and keeping it open and accessible. So when you buy a ticket, you’re not just paying for a concert, you’re chipping in toward maintaining the dunes and protecting our favorite beach on the cape.
The festival lands on Columbus Day weekend every year, which is a smart bit of scheduling. By then the summer crowds have cleared out, the water’s still swimmable for the cold-blooded, and the town has a little breathing room to host a few thousand extra visitors without the whole place grinding to a halt. The weather usually cooperates (just don’t ask the guys from Steel Pulse, who played in 2025 under heavy winds and rain; they might disagree).
what a day at the festival is actually like, and why it is awesome
The crowd is very chill. The bands are usually a mix of national touring acts, some local talent, and a few legends. The food vendors are great, with lots of options. The beer servers are plentiful so you never have to wait more than a minute or two for a beer, courtesy of the festival sponsorship of the Hog Island Brewery. It’s a laid back party scene in one of the most beautiful places on the cape.
The festival runs two stages these days, so there’s almost always music happening somewhere even while the headliners are setting up between sets. There’s a mercantile area with local vendors selling everything from art to apparel, which is a nice excuse to wander between sets.
And true to its family-friendly billing, there’s a dedicated kids’ area with its own activities, so this isn’t strictly a grown-ups-only affair. Although most parents seem to leave their kids at home to focus on enjoying the tunes.
The whole thing has a laid-back, neighborhood-party energy that’s hard to manufacture at bigger festivals. You’ll see plenty of lawn chairs, blankets, and people who clearly know each other catching up between sets. It helps that the lineup leans heavily on reggae, blues, funk, and jam-band sounds, music that’s pretty much built for swaying in the sand with a drink in each hand.
how to get there: parking, shuttles, and tickets
if you’re planning a visit, keep this in mind:
- Parking lot closures. The Nauset Beach upper parking lot gets shut down to general beach parking for the festival weekend. If you’re hoping for a normal beach day during the festival, plan around this and go to Skaket Beachinstead.
- Shuttles. Free shuttle service runs from several locations around town to get festival-goers to and from the beach, so you don’t need to fight for a parking spot. It’s a little crazy leaving but not too bad. You can actually kill 3 bucket list items with one stone — just park at the Staples Rock (hottest new attraction on the Cape) and you can take the Funk Bus shuttle to the concert. Amazing.
- VIP parking. A limited number of VIP parking spots are available right at the beach for those who book ahead.
- Tickets. Tickets go on sale through the festival’s official site, outermostfestival.com, with some also available at the gate if the event hasn’t sold out. Plan to buy them early before the bands are announced for a discount. We recommend going both days, you’ll be filled with regret on Sunday morning if you just buy the Saturday pass.
- Accessibility. Handicapped parking is available on-site, with a dedicated drop-off and pick-up area at the gate.
Can You Bring Your Dog?
Short answer: no dogs are allowed at the festival. Sorry puppy, you’ll have to stay home and snooze on the couch.
Tips for First-Timers
A few things we’d want to know before our first trip:
- Get there early, especially if you’re hoping for a good spot near the main stage. Crowds build steadily through the afternoon. Vendors rave about the soundcheck in the late morning, saying it’s like a private concert. Usually the opening acts you can get right up front for, so go for it!
- Bring cash or a card you don’t mind tapping a lot between the beer garden, food trucks, and mercantile vendors, there’s plenty to spend money on.
- Dress for actual fall beach weather. This is a Columbus Day weekend event, not a July afternoon. Layers are your friend, and so is a real jacket once the sun starts dropping.
- Expect weather curveballs. In 2025 we almost lost reggae legends Steel Pulse to The Atlantic Ocean with seemingly hurricane-level winds and rain. The sea was angry that day my friends. but they pulled through and the rest of that day’s acts relocated to other spots in Orleans in a lot minute scramble. This led to an epic evening capped off by raging jam sessions at the Hog Island Brewery. Don’t let a forecast scare you off, just come prepared.
- Book lodging early. Columbus Day weekend is already a busy travel weekend on the Cape without a music festival added to the mix. If you’re planning to stay overnight, don’t wait until the week before to find lodging. Book early and save money.
Some of our favorite moments
A few sets stand out from the festival’s run so far:
- Late night at the Hog Island Brewery in 2025 Sunday’s rain-shortened set relocated the party indoors to Hog Island in the evening, where the remaining musicians jammed for two shows. If you ever wanted to stand 5 feet from a few blues legends and rage, this was the place. We don’t usually go to the VIP Friday night show at Hog Island which kicks off the festival, but after seeing everyone jamming up close in 2025 it changed our minds. Seeing it up close is awesome!
- G. Love and Special Sauce It’s Garrett’s festival and his hometown, and it shows these sets always feel like the heart of the whole weekend. He usually sits in with the other acts, and there’s a big jam session in the end. You can tell they’re all having a blast, and everyone in the crowd is too.
- Slightly Stoopid’s 2024 headlining set brought a reggae-rock energy that felt custom-built for a Cape Cod beach. We didn’t go to this Saturday show, much to our regret. We were airing down our tires in the nearby lower ORV lot in the late morning when a huge bass line begin ripping through the air during their soundcheck. By the time I hit 15 PSI I was wishing I didn’t have my dog so we could just head inside. We bought tickets for Sunday’s show immediately, after spending all of Saturday about 6 miles down the beach at the point where the wind was blowing the bass all the way down. Amazing.
- Watch out for special guests, because G. Love has some cool friends. In 2024 Jack Johnson was a loosely guarded rumor, and he made his way onstage on Sunday afternoon and played a great set with G. Love and Donavon Frankenreiter. Totally awesome. Only complaint was the updated lyric used in the cover of Jimmy Buffett’s A pirate looks at forty, “Got to stop wishin’/ Got to go fishin’/ Down to Brewster Flats again.” Love the local reference, but replacing “down to rock bottom again” with “down to Rock Harbor again” seemed like a natural fit to keep this reference in Orleans. Jack, if you ever makes you way back to the cape again, check out Rock Harbor at sunset at low tide. It’s awesome.
- Steel Pulse deserves a special shout out for enduring a near hurricane on Sunday in 2025. They played much earlier than scheduled to beat the ever worsening rain, but even then it was a soggy mess. Sideways wind-blown rain was all over the stage, and the plastic banners nearly blew away the sides of the stage. but they still put on a killer show for an audience as a reward for showing up.
Friends of Nauset Beach: Where the Money Goes
It’s worth pausing on the festival’s nonprofit partner, Friends of Nauset Beach, since it’s a big part of why this event exists in the first place. The organization works to preserve the environmental integrity of the shoreline and keep the beach publicly accessible for the long haul — the same dunes, sandbars, and oversand trails this whole site is built around celebrating.
In 2023, the festival’s organizers presented the town’s natural resources department with a $5,000 check, earmarked for beach-related costs and initiatives. It’s a small but meaningful example of a festival actually giving back to the place that hosts it, rather than just borrowing the scenery for a weekend.
A Brief History: From Cape Cod Roots & Blues to Outermost
The festival’s had a few names and a four-year pause, so here’s the short version of how it got to where it is now:
- 2018 — Inaugural Year. What started as a one-off celebration of G. Love & Special Sauce’s 25th anniversary turned into the first Cape Cod Roots & Blues Festival.
- 2019 — Second Annual. The festival expanded with more vendors, more water stations, and a kids’ village, cementing itself as a real annual event rather than a one-time party.
- 2020—2022 — The Pause. COVID-19 put the festival on hold for four years.
- 2023 — The Comeback, Rebranded. The festival returned under its new name, Outermost Roots & Blues Festival, with a smaller, rain-soaked one-day event that still drew around 700 people and ended with a literal double rainbow over the beach.
- 2024 — Going Big. The festival expanded to a full two-day, two-stage event with a 5,000-person capacity, and brought in much bigger national names. Jack Johnson made the place go crazy.
- 2025 — The Streak Continues. Two days, two stages, an even deeper lineup, and by now a real fixture of the Outer Cape’s fall calendar. Both Saturday and Sunday’s bands were fun, and everyone had a blast.
Through every iteration, one thing has stayed constant: G. Love & Special Sauce have headlined every single year. It’s his festival, in his adopted hometown, and he’s never missed it.

Final Thoughts
The Outermost Roots & Blues Festival is one of those events that shouldn’t really work. It’s a multi-day, multi-thousand-person music festival on a shark-patrolled barrier beach. But it is a highlight of the year, and the perfect way to close down the last gasps of summer on Columbus Day weekend.
Whether you come for the music, the beer, or just the novelty of watching a stage rise out of a parking lot you’ve parked in a hundred times for an ordinary beach day, it’s worth experiencing every year.
